How to Ride a Hoverboard? – The Steps

We are often asked how to ride a hoverboard and how to ride a self balancing scooter.

First of all, you have to ensure that the battery is charged 100%. Once this is done, you can get on your hoverboard.

Stepping Onto and Standing on Hoverboard

Place one foot right before your toes on the board, which would start the device. You do not have to move back and forth.

According to some hoverboard users, LED lights are expected to act as turn signals and these have to go towards the back. In either case, you may ride in any way that you like. In case there is a beginner mode in your board, you need to activate it immediately.

You need to put your left or right foot on the self balancing scooter. Use whichever foot you find comfier to use. It is important for you to ensure two things.

  1. You should keep your hoverboard flat, or parallel to the ground level.
  2. You should keep your foot as near to the wheel as possible. If you feet are not placed wide enough, there will be a lot of difficulty in riding this device.

Once you place the right foot ahead, step on your board. You are likely to fall down if you hesitate or make delays. Simply step on the scooter just as you would step on stairs. When you do this, you are likely to get tensed as the initial response. This will make you wobble forwards and backwards. It is best to look ahead and not down. Do not try to move yet. Simply concentrate on standing and keep yourself relaxed.

Once this is done, you are ready to move around on your board and conquer the roads. This is the first step in how to ride a hoverboard.

Moving About on Your Hoverboard

The first step to moving around on your hoverboard is to focus on going in a perfect straight line. When you are using a hoverboard segway, you need to lean in the specific direction in which you wish to move. You have to shift your body weight slightly, and not lean much. You might fall down if you lean a lot. Naturally, you should simply concentrate on moving forward first. Once you have mastered this, you can focus on turning corners.

Turning

Now turn a little. It would happen in a natural manner, and almost like the board can predict your intentions. Basically however, you need to turn yourself by twisting forward the foot which is opposite to the direction in which you are trying to turn. So you have to push forward your right toe, you have to turn left.

In order to try taking on sharper turns, you will have to begin twisting the other foot back too, and basically push the heel down. Once you have mastered this move, you will be able to spin yourself in a spot.

After you are able to move forwards, also try to go backwards.

Practicing With Your Hoverboard – How to Do it the Best?

After you are an expert at these simple movements, you need to attempt laps and turn only in one direction until you are more comfortable. Once you are quite comfortable, you should attempt a lap in one direction and then another one in the reverse direction.

Stepping Off Your Hoverboard

When you wish to step off your board, you will just wish to reverse the actions that you performed in order to get on the device. Attempt to transfer the balance to the main foot and then use your secondary foot to step off the board. At times, you will feel like jumping off the board to step off it. However, you should resist the urge to do so and dismount with restraint. Otherwise, you will end up injuring yourself and also damaging the hoverboard.

Remember that mounting and dismounting the board is possibly the most difficult part of the entire process. You will need the longest time to be an expert at doing this. Try to practice stepping on the board as well as off it for some time until you are accustomed to the process.

Using the Hoverboard Remote

Given how hoverboards function, some companies make the remotes – which come with these devices – slightly more functional in ability. While using the remote for your board, you need to follow the instructions given underneath. These are particularly applicable to the IO Hawk, but can also be applied to most other remotes from other manufacturers.

Activating the Hoverboard

You can start the board simply by pressing the button located on it.

Deactivating the Hoverboard

The board can be deactivated by pressing down on the LOCK button on the hoverboard remote.

Locking the board

Simple keep pressing on the UNLOCK button of your remote when you wish to lock your board. Pressing on the same button can allow you to unlock it. Keep in mind that the light of the battery turns green while unlocked and red when it is locked.

How to Set Your Board to Beginner Mode?

In the Beginner Mode, your hoverboard will be set to a peak speed of 3 mph instead of the standard 6.2 mph. This can be a good way to increase your confidence level at using this board. Sometimes hoverboard speed goes up to 15km per hour.

If you wish to activate this mode, just press down on the UNLOCK button and hold it for 3 seconds. Its “IO” symbol will turn green. When you wish to deactivate the Beginner Mode, you need to press down on the button and hold it again for 3 seconds. Keep in mind that not every hoverboard comes with a Beginner Mode similar to the IO Hawk.

How to Calibrate Your Hoverboard?

In some cases, the gyroscopes present on your board can fail to understand what level is. This can often occur after a crash. The problem can be fixed by simply calibrating the board once again.

Just place the board on a level surface, which is important, and activate it. Lock the board by holding the UNLOCK button just one time. Once the battery symbol goes red, press on both the UNLOCK and LOCK buttons on the remote for your board. The board will beep, and the battery sign will flash orange along with the symbol “IO”.
